Patang

English

In the small town of Sangrur in Punjab, a 17-year-old Ayaan wins the chance to speak at the Youth Parliament in Lok Sabha, a dream opportunity. But when he discovers the date clashes with Ashura, a sacred day of mourning in his Muslim household, celebration turns into conflict. Tensions erupt when Ayaan declares he no longer believes in God, clashing with his devout mother. As the house grows silent, Ayaan finds refuge in science, philosophy, and the words of Bhagat Singh, whose radical essay “Why I Am an Atheist?” confronts faith, inequality, and power. In school, Gulati sir, a soft-spoken physics teacher, introduces Ayaan to the idea of pluralism, a space where belief and reason can coexist without cancelling each other out. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Basant Panchami, Patang becomes an introspective metaphor for free thinking, identity, and the fragile threads of culture that tie our society.

Biography(s):

Patang was born from a question that stayed with me after reading Why I Am an Atheist: how much of what was written a century ago still echoes within contemporary India? Set in Punjab, The film carries both the memory of Bhagat Singh and the cultural fabric that shaped his thinking. Rooftops filled with kites, conflicted homes, classrooms, festivals, and conversations that shapes a teenager''s worldview. The film attempts to explore how ideological conflict often exists not in grand confrontations, but within families, and the spaces we call home.
